The ASCEND Signature Series for Professionals concludes its landmark first season with a highly interactive session of Developing Executive Communication Skills held in the scenic Dearborn Room of The Metropolitan Club on the 67th floor of the Willis Tower, which has a spectacular view of Lake Michigan.

Every professional should communicate differently with their family and friends than they do at work. However, few of us know how to do that. We assume how we talk with family members is fine for work as well.

Unfortunately, that is not true. The higher we move in our professions, the more time we spend communicating either with clients or executives in our own company; yet…

* We often don’t know that what we say might offend or irritate them;
* We are frequently aware that we don’t have strong professional relationships with clients but don’t understand why;
* We see other colleagues move ahead of us and are baffled as our talent is just as good, if not better, than theirs.

In this final session, Patricia Smith-Pierce, Ph.D. and Founder and CEO of The Insight Communication Group, will help everyone understand what their communication style is. In addition, Dr. Smith-Pierce will help each person learn how to recognize and adapt to differing styles. Finally, she will each attendee how to maximize his or her communication style to be as effective as possible.

With more than 23 years of teaching, administrative and consulting experience, Dr. Smith-Pierce has led many group and one-on-one sessions for major tax and accounting firms such as Deloitte, Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and West Monroe Partners. She has authored numerous newspaper and journal articles and has been a frequent speaker at local, regional, and national conferences.

Join us for Developing Executive Communication Skills and learn how to develop YOUR skills.

Snacks and soft drinks will be provided.
Please contact Kevin Yu or Lily Yang if you have any questions.

September 14, 2010 – Tuesday, 5:30pm – 7:15pm Financial Innovation and the Future of Risk

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2010
CORPORATE PROGRAM
ANNUAL CME GROUP LECTURE ON GLOBAL FINANCIAL MARKETS

FINANCIAL INNOVATION AND THE FUTURE OF RISK

Robert C. Merton, Nobel Prize-winning economist and MIT Sloan School of Management Distinguished Professor of Finance

In the aftermath of the financial crisis, governments, financial institutions, and central banks across the world have examined the root causes of the financial meltdown. Some observers have cited financial innovation as a factor in the housing market bubble and subsequent crash that contributed to the crisis. Others have argued that over the last four decades, financial innovation has driven the global financial system toward greater efficiency, and generated significant economic benefit in the process. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has emphasized risk mitigation and awareness, stating that it would be unwise to stop financial innovation. What is the role of financial innovation and how can it preserve the integrity of the marketplace?

Join us on September 14th, when we host Nobel Prize-winning economist Robert C. Merton, who will deliver the inaugural CME Group Lecture on Global Financial Markets. Dr. Merton will talk on “Financial Innovation and the Future of Risk.” Dr. Merton will offer observations on structural issues contributing to the financial crisis, discuss the role of financial innovation as an engine for global economic growth, examine whether or not financial innovation increases the risk of a crisis, and reflect on the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

Robert C. Merton is an internationally renowned economist, financial innovator, and recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1997 for his work on a new method to determine the value of derivatives. He is currently the MIT Sloan School of Management Distinguished Professor of Finance.

The Annual CME Group Lecture on Global Financial Markets was established to promote understanding of the role of markets in the aftermath of the financial crisis.

June 4, 2009  – Presented by The Chicago Council on Global Affairs
INAUGURAL DR. SCHOLL FOUNDATION LECTURE ON U.S.-CHINA RELATIONS

Managing U.S.-China Economic and Trade Relations: Thoughts for the Years Ahead

Ambassador Carla Anderson Hills, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Hills & Company, and Former United States Trade Representative

outsideevent_carlapic When United States President Barack Obama met with Chinese President Hu Jintao in early April ahead of the G20 summit, the two leaders agreed to convene the first meeting of the new “China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue” in Washington this summer. This dialogue, which will include topics beyond economics and marks an expansion of the previous dialogue under the Bush administration, is a key signal of the deepening of the U.S.-China relationship. As both countries continue to manage the global economic downturn, the United States finds China funding much of its deficit, while China looks to stimulate domestic consumption in response to lower U.S. and global demand for exports. In short, the two countries are inextricably tied, and leaders of both countries must work to successfully navigate the relationship. At this inaugural Dr. Scholl Foundation Lecture on U.S.-China Relations, Ambassador Carla Hills will offer her thoughts for the years ahead.

Ambassador Carla A. Hills is the current chair of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations. She is chairman and chief executive officer of Hills & Company, International Consultants, which advises U.S. businesses on investment, trade, and risk assessment issues abroad, particularly in emerging market economies. Ambassador Hills served as United States Trade Representative from 1989 to 1993, where she was President George H.W. Bush’s principal advisor on international trade policy. She was also the nation’s chief trade negotiator, representing American interests in multilateral and bilateral trade negotiations throughout the world. She led the U.S. negotiations in the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade talks, concluded the North American Free Trade Agreement, and entered into a large number of trade and investment agreements with countries all around the world.  Ambassador Hills is cochair of the Council on Foreign Relations and chair of the Inter-American Dialogue.
About the Dr. Scholl Foundation Lecture on U.S.-China Relations:
This initiative, made possible by the Dr. Scholl Foundation, seeks to bring to Chicago one high-level, well respected American or Chinese policymaker, government official or thought leader to deliver a major public lecture on key foreign policy issues facing U.S.-China relations.
